ESPEN 2022 Guideline Recommendation

Trace element losses increase dramatically during major burns, GI fistula output, and renal replacement therapy in the ICU.

Day 1 Infusion: Trace elements must be provided from Day 1 to the last day of parenteral nutrition.
Burn Patients: Major burns require higher zinc supplementation due to exudative losses.
CRRT Support: Patients undergoing CRRT require up to 10 mg/day zinc supplementation.

Dosage & Administration

Standard TPN Dose 2.5 to 4.0 mg elemental zinc per day added to IV TPN solutions.

Hypermetabolic / Burn Dose Up to 10–12 mg elemental zinc per day as per clinical protocols.
